A year ago techies were buzzing about the need for a smaller version of Apple‘s famous iPad: the current size was large, heavy, and expensive. With rival companies releasing products like the Kindle Fire and various tablets, we expected the iPad to have a similar price tag to compete with the market. At an announcement today in San Jose, Tim Cook gave us a first glimpse at the new, super improved tablet.
The 4th generation iPad will have a 7.9 inch screen (almost 2 inches smaller than previous iPads) and has an A6X processor, just like the iPhone 5, which promises lightening speed. But is this a practical move? Considering you can get a decent tablet for around $200, the new iPad can’t possibly hope to compete! The cheapest one, which is 16GB and wifi only will cost $329. Want 4G? Add an extra $130! Think about it–if you’re begging the parents to invest in a tablet (for “researching school projects” right?) which are they going to buy? Sure, iPad has the great technology, but if you take into account the lifespan of modern technology, this thing will be out-of-date before you’ve saved up for the newest model.
I’ve been excited about the mini iPad–I thought it would be a great, slim tool for me to keep on the go. I pictured myself at Forza, a local coffee chain, drinking a latte and writing celeb news for you guys. But that was before I knew it would cost almost as much as my iPhone 5 (I want the 64GB!). This has definitely deterred me from buying. My MacBook is heavy, but it gets the job done! What do you think? Is the iPad worth saving or negotiating for? Or can you stick to the smartphone or non-Apple tablet? Let us know! I’m totally shocked but maybe I’m all alone on this. Am I going crazy?
