We love everything about Kaley Cuoco–from her lovely blonde tresses, to her burbling laugh (burbling is like a fountain or brook, right? Bubbly and overflowing?), to her love for pit bull rescue. You know her as Penny on the hit show The Big Bang Theory, and if you follow the show, you know that last week something incredible happened! After years of waiting, we finally heard three very important words come out of Penny’s mouth–words that made Leonard cry!
Kaley sat down to talk about what those words meant to the cast and crew, who have been waiting to hear them since season one. She also dishes on the difference between herself and Penny, and what viewers can expect from the show. Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen last week’s episode, stop reading now!
When asked about saying those words in real life, Kaley jokes, “I’ve said “I love you” too many times. I need to stop. I am…oh, my God, I fall hard. It’s the opposite of what Penny does, so I definitely am not afraid to say those three words.” So how did the cast feel about the script for the big reveal? Well they filmed it in one take! Creator Chuck Lorre said he didn’t want to mess with perfection. But when Kaley first saw the script, she explains:
I cried at the table read. I cried in the rehearsal. I cried in run-throughs. That’s why I had to take such a long beat, because I thought, “If I close my eyes, tears are just going to come streaming down my face,” and I wanted it to look more pent-up. I thought, “Oh, they’ll tighten that [in editing],” but they left it all in there. I guess they liked it. I feel like Penny’s got just as many issues as Leonard, in different ways, and this has obviously been very difficult for her, so I loved that it came out without her knowing. It shows that she meant it. It was really the first time I felt like I was actually in that moment, that I was talking to Leonard — as cheesy as that sounds. It’s been an amazing and crazy road, almost six years up to that point, so it’s just such a cool moment.
We can’t wait to see what happens tonight. This show has replaced the gaping hole left by Friends. It’s witty but with heart and well developed characters. Have you fallen in love yet? I was skeptical at first too, eschewing it entirely until this summer, when I fell for it. Hard. Tune in tonight and let us know what you think!
