Anime English Dub Review: Bakuman

When I first heard that they were dubbing this I was kind of skeptical, because I wasn’t really expecting this series to even receive a dub. So far I’ve only watched 7 episodes and I do have some problems with the voices that were chosen but I actually do find that most of them are well done.

First off we have our first protagonist Moritaka Mashiro voiced by Michael Sinterniklaas. I’ve actually never heard of him and was surprised how much I actually liked his voice for this character. It just suits his personality and it really does do the original voice justice.

Next our second protagonist Akito Takagi voice by Kevin T. Collins, I tried researching this guy and I really could not find anything at all of his previous roles. But right when I heard his first phrase I had to admit that this voice was actually great. It gives him the intelligent sound and fits the emotions of the character perfectly.

Moving on to the main female role Miho Azuki voiced by Stephanie Sheh, known for her role in Bleach as Orihime. Right when I heard she was going to do the voice I knew it be good, her voice is very soft and would fit the characters shy personality well, which it actually does, it lived up to my expectations.

Then we have our second main female role Kaya Miyoshi voiced by Amanda Shuckman, once again not quite familiar with her. But I think she does a good job, her voice really suits the characters attitude quite well.

Now we have Akira Hattori voiced by Wayne Grayson, I’m just not feeling it. Don’t get me wrong it’s not as if his voice is bad, I just think Hattori would have a much different sound. I also loved his little laugh in the original as well. I think this character is the only thing that I was slightly disappointed on really, I was expecting something a little deeper.

Now for my favorite character Eiji Nizuma voiced by Robby Sharpe, this character was a very important one for me. So far I only heard a bit of his voice from the ending of episode 7 and I think he does a quite a great job at the sounds Eiji makes when he’s drawing but the actual voice is alright I guess. It has quite the potential; I’ll need to hear a little more for a final verdict but so far it’s good.

Bakuman-7

In conclusion, this dub is one I’d consider above average. Especially the two main protagonists Mashiro and Takagi, Sinterniklaas and Collins do an amazing job that makes the characters sound so natural. Personally they are the reason why I enjoy it so much; and the other voice acting for the side characters is great too. I really like the voices for Mashiro’s two friends in the beginning for some reason I found them hilariously fitting.
