World of Warcraft is still the world’s largest subscription MMORPG to date and once had as many as twelve million subscribers, but this has all changed, Activision Blizzard revealed last month that the number of subscriptions have dropped to 10.2 million.
WoW producer John Lagrave has confirmed that the decline is partially because of the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. He said “We certainly do look at [where WoW players go], and we have a very smart bunch of guys who do our analytics for us, of course people are trying Star Wars; our development team are trying Star Wars! I’m one of the few people who are still playing it, actually. But yeah, we’ve seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it’s also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it’s not surprising.”
He also mentioned that some WoW players left because of Skyrim being released, though it didn’t cause any of the subscriptions to drop.
Now you can give WoW a try since it’s currently free-to-play until level 20 which isn’t all that bad for those of you who are curious about the game, though raising the level cap for the trial could be done but not any time soon.
There has been no news on when the new expansion pack is going to come out, but all I know is that I probably won’t be getting it. Pandas don’t interest me the slightest but, I’ll wait for feedback for when it releases, I’m currently enjoying Star Wars: The Old Republic and can’t wait for patch 1.2 to come out.
