The holidays are the perfect time to bring out old classic movies. One of my favorite Christmas movies is the 1945 film Christmas In Connecticut. It’s a great movie to watch with your grandparents! It comes in at number 10 on our movie countdown because of the heartwarming plot, unique story, and situational humor. The great Barbara Stanwyck plays Elizabeth Lane, a writer for a homekeeping magazine who isn’t all that she appears.
Christmas in Connecticut is the story of Jefferson and Seymour, two men who are stranded on a boat during WWII. After being rescued, a nurse feels bad that they’ll have to spend the holiday alone, so she writes in to a magazine. Elizabeth is a vintage Martha Stewart. She writes a column about housekeeping and recipes, but is a fraud! Instead of the gorgeous Connecticut farm she claims to live in, she rents a small apartment in New York. All her recipes come from Felix, a bistro owner. So when her editor calls her up to say that she must have two war heroes over for the holidays, she must find a home, a baby, and the kitchen skills to keep her real identity a secret. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a romance too–but you’ll have to watch to find out!
The movie has great really clever writing. Some of my favorite quotes are:
Watch now. I show you how to flip-flop the flop-flips.
Maybe scarlet fever. It’s a better color for Christmas.
Catastroph!
Check out the movie and let us know what you think!
