Growing up in a world where skinny is in can be very pressuring on young girls to always look their best. Let me be the first to tell you that although skinny can be flattering in certain circumstances, it isn’t necessarily the most flattering on all body types. Also keep in mind there is a difference between being skinny and being in shape (and everyone’s “shape” is different!).
In high school, I was always the “thick” friend. I wasn’t fat, but I wasn’t nearly as skinny as most of my girlfriends. It was at times embarrassing but it took me until being older to realize that all along I was just as attractive as they were. I learned that although I was in a bigger pant size, I was still in shape. After speaking to a doctor, I learned that I was in fact big boned. Although I was short and everyone said I should be around 100 pounds, my body was never designed to be 100 pounds. Had I ever tried to get down to that weight even while in my teenage years it would have been highly unhealthy for me!
If you are concerned about your body image talk to your family doctor. There are other things to take into consideration then the number on the scale or the size of your pants. My best friend growing up was just slightly taller than me. She was always in a smaller pant size then me and that always had me feeling self conscious. Funny part is, she weighed the exact same numerical weight I did, I just never knew it. She always “looked” skinner than me. I always felt she was skinner then me. The fact of the matter is, we were just built differently. I had wider hips then she did, which in turn made me heavier looking on the bottom. I also had a larger chest than her, which in her eyes was a bad thing. I was much more hour glass figured than she was. She had a smaller chest and wider waist and a much more boxy figure. I simply looked at her pant size and said “Oh! She’s so much skinner than I am!”. All girls are not created equal, take it from me! Speak with your doctor about your ideal weight based off your bone structure and body type, I bet you’ll be surprised at what he has to say!
I know very few girls who have a positive body image, why you ask? Well, it’s simple. You’re growing up in a world that says “skinny is in” and that is not true. Skinny is beautiful on many girls, in fact, just as beautiful as girls who are a bit heavier than the girl standing next to them. I promise you this though, if you start looking at your body the way it’s supposed to be, rather than the way the media says it should be, you will be a lot happier off. I hope that everyone of our readers feels great about their body and if you do that’s amazing. Perhaps you should share this with a friend, or two, to help them understand that all bodies are not created equal.
