Easy Ways to Lighten Your Hair Naturally

If you are tired of your hair color but don’t want drastic color changes, you may want to consider lightening your hair. Here are some easy ways to lighten your hair naturally.


There is nothing more natural than good ole sunshine. If you have noticed that your hair tends to get lighter in the summer, you can thank the sun for that. All you need to do is lie out in the sun and spread your hair out so it absorbs the rays of the sun.

Using apple cider vinegar will leave reddish highlights in the same color. Just create a mixture of half distilled water and half apple cider vinegar. Apply the mixture completely to your hair if you want to lighten all of your hair or apply with a makeup brush or small paint brush to have strands of highlights. Leave in your hair for 25-30 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Baking Soda

You can naturally lighten your hair with a paste made of baking soda and warm water. Use ½ cup of baking soda and enough warm water so that you form a paste of medium consistency. Apply the baking soda paste to your hair for 20-25 minutes, then rinse with warm water.


Honey contains a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide, a lightening agent. You don’t want to use just plain honey because it is rather sticky and is hard to rinse from your hair. Instead, mix the honey with water so that it is easier to apply and rinse out. Apply the honey and water mixture to your hair, cover with a shower cap, let it set overnight and rinse out with warm water in the morning.

Lemon is probably the most commonly used ingredients to lighten hair. The reason it is so popular is that it contains citric acids, designed to lift color and create highlights. Mix together one cup of lemon juice and ¼ cup of warm water in a spray bottle and shake it well to mix. Spray the solution onto your hair and lie in the sun to allow the citrus to work.
