Drug and Alcohol Abuse
In 13 Reasons Why drug and alcohol abuse is everywhere. It’s no secret that teens often experiment with substances during their high school years. The show prompts parents to talk about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Rape culture exists. The show tackles sexual violence and its persistence in schools and teen parties. It also shows just how vulnerable young females feel, especially when faced with the toxic behavior associated with masculinity.
Opening Up Dialogue
While there’s no doubting that viewers either love or hate 13 Reasons Why, the show has helped open up dialogue about bullying and teen suicide. Many teens face the same issues Hannah Baker deals with everyday but unfortunately, have no one to talk to about it. The series has helped parents and school teachers discuss topics that some teens are just too scared to talk about.
Signs of Depression
Most people who are clinically depressed won’t tell you. In fact, they might not even know it. While there’s no mention of Hannah Baker’s depression, she does show signs of struggling emotionally with possible mental health issues.
Bullying
Bullying has always been a huge problem among teens, but it just seems to get worse with each passing year. While there’s no doubt that many parents, teachers and teens work to combat bullying everyday, 13 Reasons Why does a good job of showing just how oblivious many people can be to obvious, everyday signs or cruel classroom behavior.
Gossip

Support
Teens don’t always reach out for support when they need it. Instead, they tend to keep their emotions to themselves or reach out to their peers over their family members. 13 Reasons Why does a good job of showing just how crucial it is for parents to not only support their kids, but to be involved in their personal lives, too.
Small Actions and Far-Reaching Consequences
One simply text message can easily destroy a person’s life. The show reminds viewers that one little step can help save a person’s life while also reminding adults just how difficult it is to be a teen today.
