Serena Williams Stands with Her Long-Time Friend after Controversial Oprah Interview
Serena Williams proves once again that she’s the staunchest ally and defender of Meghan Markle as she continuously stands with her friend throughout the waves of harassment and racism she’s faced since becoming a royal. Williams was one of the very first people to speak out in defense and support of Meghan after the explosive interview Meghan and her husband Harry had with Oprah, saying that she knows how it feels to witness the forces of racism.
Williams calls Meghan “the strongest person”
The Oprah interview was the first major interview that the Sussexes were involved in after stepping down from their royal duties. It was a controversial “tell-all” interview. In the aftermath, Williams took to social media to share that her friend Meghan “lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion. She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.
She once again echoed these sentiments during the debut episode of retailer Stuart Weitzman’s Shine series. The video was posted on YouTube on Wednesday March 24. “Meghan is a great person and I think the epitome of strength, the epitome of confidence, the epitome of just selflessness,” she said. “And I know it’s not easy – and you could see from the interview that it wasn’t easy – but she had so much poise and she still had so much… just so much class.”
Meghan confirmed she was pregnant with a daughter at the time of the interview, and that was something that Williams, who also has a 3-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. with husband Alexis Ohanian, acknowledged in a statement “I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter, and your daughter to live in a society driven by respect.”

Williams and Meghan’s friendship
Serena Williams and Meghan Markle have been friends for seven years since their first public hang in 2014. Over the years, Meghan has shown support for her friend by regularly coming to see her games while Williams has shown the support and love back by standing with Meghan against the dozens of negative media coverage that she’s received since 2017.
“We hit it off immediately,” Meghan wrote on her now defunct blog The Tig about meeting Serena Williams, “taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girlie stuff. So began our friendship.”
Through the years, the friends continued to show support for each other, from Markle telling the press that Williams will “be an amazing mom” to Williams attending Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding.
