The show has also inspired several spinoffs, including NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Hawai’i. So, has CBS renewed NCIS for another season? Keep reading to find out the details!
Has CBS Renewed NCIS for Another Season
After NCIS Season 20 dropped on CBS in September 2022, it became the third-longest primetime drama show in the United States alongside Gunsmoke. NCIS and Gunsmoke were right behind Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU. For years, the CBS show has gathered appreciation and fandom from committed fans as well as several awards, including a number of Primetime Emmy nominations. The success of these shows also led to a special three-hour cross-over episode between NCIS, NCIS: Hawai’i, and NCIS: Los Angeles.
NCIS premiered on CBS in 2003 and followed an elite team that was initially led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), who is a former Marine with a grumpy exterior. However, after Season 19, Harmon decided to exit the show, following which his character was shown going off to Alaska to live a life of serenity and peace post-retirement. While Harmon’s exit suggested that the show might come to an end, it continued and still does, gluing the fans for more. Now, the show is being helmed by another team leader portrayed by Gary Cole.
The Show Continues to Retain its Crown as Broadcast TV’s Most-watched Scripted Show
Even with Harmon’s exit, the show continues to retain its crown as broadcast TV’s most-watched scripted show. While most networks are canceling their popular shows due to budget cuts, CBS has been renewing shows at a fast pace. NCIS isn’t the only show renewed at CBS. Earlier this year, the network renewed popular shows like FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, FBI, Fire Country, and another fan-favorite show, The Equalizer. Apart from this, other comedy shows like The Neighborhood, Young Sheldon, Ghosts, Bob Hearts Abishola, as well as So Help Me Todd received a renewal confirmation from the network.
NCIS is a brainchild of Don McGill and Donald P. Bellisario and served as a spinoff of the series JAG. Now, the show has surpassed the original series’ length and is now double JAG that wrapped up after Season 10 and a total of 227 episodes.
